Student Wellbeing

Oscar Romero is committed to providing a safe, engaging and inclusive learning environment that upholds the right of each child in our care to be treated with dignity and respect.

Inspired by the teachings of the Gospel, we hold the care, safety and well being of our children as a central and fundamental responsibility’ promoting and fostering healthy physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing of all our students.

Oscar Romero has implemented a range of support measures to promote engagement, positive behaviour and respectful relationships for all students in our care.  In order to recognise students social, emotional or educational needs, as a group or as individuals, we have strategies in place to identify these students, and provide them with the support they need to flourish at our school

Oscar Romero works collaboratively with students parent/carers to establish fair and respectful behaviour policies and practices, based on Catholic Education Melbourne Guiding policies.  We use a Response to Intervention model, this is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behaviour needs.  We implement a range of universal, targeted group and individual strategies – inclusive of learning and behaviour support plans.

Positive Behaviour Management

Oscar Romero aims to create a school culture in which all members of the community are able to flourish holistically through our Positive Behaviour for Learning Approach to behaviour management. This approach recognises the rights and responsibilities of students, staff, family and community members to develop self-discipline and the skills and strategies to make responsible, healthy and informed choices in a safe environment.

Based on the key values Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe, our school uses a proactive approach to teaching and establishing prosocial behaviours. We develop these values through explicit teaching as well as daily interactions across our school, supported by our Positive Behaviour Matrix.

Bully Prevention

Oscar Romero has a no tolerance to bullying approach.  We adopt a whole school approach when responding to issues and continually review our Student Wellbeing Guidelines and Bully Prevention Policy so that we continue to promote and foster a safe and stimulating learning environment for all our students.

Buddy Program

At the beginning of each year all Foundation students are allocated a Year Five students and a “buddy”.  The buddy system operates to support children to feel comfortable and secure in their new environment and provide a familiar face out in the yard and at special school events.

Lunch Clubs

We offer a variety of supervised lunch clubs throughout each term.  Lunch clubs provide for the physical, social, emotional, artistic, musical, technological and creative interest of students.  Lunch Clubs are advertised on a notice board and are broadcasted over the PA system each day.
